Cumhuriyet’s jailed editor: If the coup succedeed, we were going to be arrested anyway

The independent member of parliament Aylin Nazlikaya has visited Cumhuriyet’s editor-in-chief Oguz Guven who is imprisoned at Silivri. Guven said to Nazlikaya that the tweets which were grounds for his arrest did not bear the the intentions that the prosecutor has claimed to. He added that a new category of crime was created that of “intention reading.”

Oguz who has been imprironed for 19 days now said: ”Their real goal is to silence the opposition. If the coup was successful we would also be the ones to be arrested”

He sent the following message with Nazlikaya: ”If there is a price to pay, let’s pay it. Yet, this affair is really fishy! We have nothing to be ashamed of. We will look to our children and grand children with our head held high. However, I really wonder how those who with their commands undermine the law and make up crimes will look into their children’s eyes. I wonder. Those who have condemned Nazim Hikmet for 23 years in prison and imprisoned him for 13 year have been remembered in history with shame. We, today, fight for freedom of speech and thought and that is why with Sedat Ergin, they have created a new category of crime that we call “intention reading.” The tweets which were grounds for my arrest did not bear the the intentions that the prosecutor has claimed to at all. Our purpose with that article was to get the attention on a possible murder. There was a misunderstanding on words due to the limited word number allowed on twitter and despite me erasing the heading 55 seconds following its publication they have imprisoned me. My conscious is calm. I have just one worry and that is that my grandson  Aren will be mad at me for not seeing him. Other than that we’re standing tall and we will keep telling the truths.

The Emergency state is an excuse.

Nazlikaya has said that Guven feels confident as he knows he is right but he is limited due to the restrictions put on him by the state of emergency. She added that the state of emergency is an excuse for the AKP government to apply the law the way it wants: “They acquitted the person who defamed Ataturk in the space of one week. This shows how unfairly the law is applied. The justice of the AKP has been built on inventing crimes. They want to create a climate of self-censorship by accusing all journalists of the same crime. Yet, if they have forgotten, let’s remind them. These journalists have taken the relay from Ugur Mumcu and Ahmet Taner Kislali. They will follow their tradition and they will shut-up, they will not be silenced!”
