Gazete Duvar reported that Ökkeş Namlı, the mayor of Gaziantep’s Düziçi district, said he would fire local government employees who vote “no” in the upcoming constitutional referendum: “People should know on which side their bread is buttered — anyone who makes their living from the state and then supports ‘no’ is a dishonorable.”
At a Gaziantep rally promoting the “yes” vote in the upcoming constitutional referendum, Düziçi Mayor Ökkeş Namlı called those who have jobs with or through the state and now plan to vote “no” dishonorable cowards.
According to an article in Manifesto, Düziçi Mayor Ökkeş Namlı, speaking at the “Düziçi Says Yes” festival, spoke harshly about people who obtained government jobs during the AK Party era and plan to vote “no” in the April 16referendum, calling them “şerefsiz,” a word for “dishonorable” with insulting, even profane connotations in Turkish. Namlı, who said he will fire “no” voters from their government positions, explained: “I would not be an honorable man if I let these people stay in their positions when their places could be filled by you and your families.”
Namlı, who claims those who disagree with him are followers of Fethullah Gülen or Abdullah Öcalan, said “These people came into their jobs through İŞKUR [a government employment agency] and now are working for No! You can’t do that, brother!” Namlı’s full remarks were as follows:
“I must say this or people will think Ökkeş Namlı has gone soft. To those who got their jobs during the AK Party era, to those who found work through İŞKUR, to the retired — if you don’t vote yes, the responsibility for this nation’s suffering will be on your heads. Let no one think they can cheat an AK Party provincial president, district president, or MP!
“You are the ones deceive and who will be deceived. You would eat our food, go to our hospitals? You would eat enough for two when you were only entitled to enough for one? And then to say ‘I support “no”‘? This is the current situation of the country. Anyone who responds this way to the attacks on us from the inside and the outside can only be called inglourious, inglourious inglourious.
“As for those who don’t vote, if they eat the AK Party’s bread, let them choke on it! Don’t ever think that after the election, those who said no will remain in place. […] I would not be an honorable man if I let these people stay in their positions when their places could be filled by you and your families.”
