Turkey’s pro-Erdogan media fiercely attacks CENTCOM Commander for supporting SDF/YPG

YeniŞafak, Turkey’s Islamist newspaper which is closely aligned with the AKP Administration and President Erdogan’s Palace, fiercely attacked US Administration today for delivering what appeared to be new armored vehicles and other logistical support to Syrian Democratic Forces, SDF.

YSafak particularly went after the CENTCOM Commander Votel for holding talks with SDF, which the paper stated: “talks with PKK affiliated YPG terrorists concerning the Raqqa operation and delivered a weapons shipment in the Syrian town of Kobane despite Ankara’s warnings to Washington to not support terrorists against Daesh.”

Turkish leaders, including President Erdogan, have been stating that Turkey and Turkish backed FSA forces will move to Manbij soon after taking over al Bab. YSafak wrote: “During his visit, Votel and the YPG and SDF agreed to concrete on Manbij where Turkish military-backed Free Syrian Army (FSA) fighters are to conduct an operation soon to drive the Democratic Union Party (PYD) from the town.”

Turkish administration has been so far unwilling to criticize the Trump Administration as they were attacking the Obama Administration previously. This may change soon if the Trump administration decides continue supporting SDF, as the initial signs show.

In YSafak, Turkish Defense Minister Fikri Isik quoted: “Turkey will conduct operations in Syria’s Raqqa and Manbij, as these two Syrian cities are Turkey’s priorities.” The minister also said Turkey and the U.S. will gain ground as long as the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump does not push for the Kurdistan Workers’ Party- (PKK) affiliated PYD’s People’s Protection Units (YPG) to take part in the Raqqa operation.

“If Washington wants the Raqqa operation to be successful, they need to carry it out with Arab elements rather than the PKK-affiliated YPG,” Işık said.
